Ancient Greece

This week we've been learning about Ancient Greece.

We also learned how to spell our name in Greek letters. We used a pointy stick like Ancient Greeks did. This is my name in Greek:

We've been reading The Odyssey (for kids) and listening to Greek myths.

My favourite is about Persephone which you might have already read about.

This photo is of a pomegranate I made with plasticine:

This is a picture of a sea serpent:

I've also learned about Heracles who strangled a snake with his bare hands when he was a baby! And when he was older he killed a lion with his bare hands.

Persephone

Persephone is a girl in a myth.

Her mother's name is Demeter. She is a goddess of gardens and growing things. She does it so that people and animals can eat.

Persephone went out of the house one day when her mother was out working. She played with her friends then somebody who liked her named Hades came and took her away with him underground. He decided to kidnap her because her mother didn't allow him to marry her. She was not allowed to eat in the underground or she'd have to stay there. But she ate 6 pomegranate seeds.

Demeter was very worried. Too worried about Persephone that she didn't take care of the plants. She didn't take care of it for a long time so Zeus had to make a meeting with everyone because since Persephone was gone there was no food. So he told Hermes, the messenger to go and ask Hades to let her go.

Because she had eaten 6 seeds, she could not go back forever, but it wasn't a whole fruit, so she had to go back for 6 months above the ground, then go back underground for 6 months.

Demeter gets to have her daughter back for Summer and Spring, but when she goes back underground Demeter is so sad that there is no food.

And that's how we have summer, spring, autumn and winter.

This is a picture of Persephone eating the pomegranite:

And this is a picture of Persephone's mother being very sad that she has gone.

Robert Burns Life

Robert Burns is a famous poet. He became more famous when he died. He was buried on the same day his son was born. It would have been very sad for his wife if she couldn't to to the funeral. In Scotland, they have a night called 'Burns night' on Burns' birthday. Tonight we're going to Burns night at Tyndale house (where dad works). This is one of my favourite poems that Robert Burns wrote. I like it because it is sad and beautiful.

My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose

O my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry , my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve !
And fare-thee-weel, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' 'twere ten thousand mile!

Battling Boudicca

I've been researching Boudicca.

Boudicca was a very brave Queen. She was queen of the Iceni trible in East Anglia (near where we live!) in 60AD. The Romans thought that she couldn't take over the land when her husband died. She was furious because the Romans took her land and whipped her and her daughters.

She called her army together and went with them to the Roman capital. She won the first battle, but lost the last battle.

Boudicca had the most people. She had 200,000 people. The Romans had 10,000.  She had more, but But the Romans were better fighters. 80,000 of Boudicca's people died.

Legends say that after Boudicca's defeat, she and her daughters poisoned themselves to avoid being captured by Romans.

I like Boudicca because she was very brave.
